South Korea's newly-elected President Park Geun-Hye is already signalling she wants better relations with their northern neighbor.

Good luck with that.

Last time South Korea tried this, it was called the Sunshine Policy. It was an utter failure. In exchange for economic zones that almost entirely benefited Pyongyang, and boatloads of free food and fuel for the beggar-bully in the north, South Korea got zilch.

The North Korean regime can only attempt to justify its existence by demonizing an external enemy (whether that country wants to be an enemy or not). There can be no peace until the regime is toppled.More >>

No kidding. I was under the impression that four Americans were dead because the State Department did an awesome job. My mistake.

What a shame that this report vindicates those who "jumped the gun" to suggest this incident ought to have political reprecussions before the last American election. I guess it doesn't really matter now.More >>

WikiLeaks attacks Malala?I am angry right now. Very, very angry... at WikiLeaks.

I have never had any praise for them anyway. They are the enemies of civilization. They have no regards for the families they have ruined with their supposed championing of free speech. They have published videos of so-called atrocities with no context. They have leaked the names of the Afghans and Iraqis co-operating with the Coalition, to whom the glory-seeking Assange apparently shows no empathy.

But what makes me furious, what causes my blood to boil at obscene levels, is their reaction to the growing support for Malala Yousafzai to be named as the Guardian’s Person of the Year. Bradley Manning won. Of course, I don’t think much of that. But what is truly disgusting about this sordid affair is how Wikileaks took to Malala’s competition in this very low-stakes game.

Malala Yousafzai, for those of you who have been living under a rock, is the 15-year-old girl who was shot by Taliban gunman for daring to speak out against their rule. The attack rightfully sparked domestic and international outrage.

Here are the latest dispatches from the front.

If that's the angle we need to at least get Americans to pay attention to what these "Syrian rebel" scumbags are up to, so be it. The jihadists have chemical weapons (which they successfully test on rabbits in this video) -- and they're prepared to use them. The only thing we're not sure about is the sequence. Attack Assad's forces, first? Or will they lob them at Tel Aviv the first chance they get?More >>

Will Uganda commit genocide against its own homosexual population?

Since 2009, a uniquely disturbing bill has been winding its way through the Ugandan parliament. The proposed law was not proposed by some wingnutty faction, but by the Speaker of the House, David Bahati. Indeed, the bill has widespread popular support. Bahati has called the impending vote on the bill a "Christmas gift for the Ugandan people".

The vote may happen at any time on the Anti-Homosexuality (or "Kill the Gays") Bill, which would impose draconian punishments on LGBT people, from lifelong prison sentences for a single homosexual act to capital punishment for having gay sex more than once.

A Change.org petition to get Citibank and Barclays to condemn this bill has good intent, but is an inadequate pathetic, pitiful international response to this barbarism. Western governments and NGOs have been relatively (not entirely -- relatively) silent on the official anti-gay bigotry that is endemic to Uganda and much of the region.

This bill is nothing less than a call to genocide. It demands a robust international response by all those who respect human rights. Threatening to end all foreign aid would be a good start. Targeted sanctions...More >>

It's not about democracy versus Islamist theocracy in Egypt, right? The Muslim Brotherhood were democratically elected, which mean that even if they skew the political process to ensure they always remain in power, well, that's democracy, right? Right?

Big media newswires like Reuters would have you believe that the main conflict in Egypt is between counter-revolutionary Mubarak-loyalist (can there truly be such a thing anymore?) judges and a democratically-elected Muslim Brotherhood that is intent on changing the country for the better (even if the changes thus far mainly involve a consolidation of power that even the last dictator never had.

Surprisingly, Egyptians aren't buying this -- and may have finally figured out that Islam isn't the solution if the objective is extracting your country from hellhole status. They're still fighting back against Morsi's decrees.

Officers fired teargas at up to 10,000 demonstrators angered by Mursi's drive to hold a referendum on a new constitution on December 15. Some broke through police lines around his palace and protested next to the perimeter wall.

Sadly, 10,000 might not be enough:

Despite the latest protests, there has been only a limited response to opposition calls for a mass campaign of civil
