The Egyptian and Libyan embassy incidents were apparently only  the first of many such "spontaneous" planned actions by Islamists to flex their muscles. This video helps explain what's going on -- and why America's efforts to reconcile with Islamic states have only met with dismal failure.More >>

These protests are being carried out by a statistically insignificant and numerically insubstantial body of the global Muslim population, while the vast majority of this 1.4 billion-strong community do absolutely nothing to show their support for freedom of speech, peaceful dialogue and not sending mobs of thugs to burn down diplomatic missions.

But I wouldn't want to cast aspersions based on the actions and attitudes of this overwhelming majority tiny minority.More >>

Facebook misogyny bad hijab sexual discrimination Islam politicsOf all of the pointless discussions taking place on Facebook at any given moment, I thought this particular one was worth a little further diagnosis, if not to understand, than at least to exhibit the mentality at work in such “debates” over women’s dress codes in Islamic contexts.

This morning, someone on Facebook named Mohammad Aman tagged me in this photo he posted, with the caption:

Which one look nice and respective to you?????
Please answer upper question....

The deluge of comments (over 100 within a few hours) were revealing of a debate playing out within and beyond Muslim societies offline and online. And while I welcome the fact that there is debate at all, the level and substance of that debate is not very encouraging.

The first thought that occurred to me in seeing this photo was, what is the point? Indeed, a small number of others felt similarly and said so. One commenter asked, “What's the point of this? To promote religious bigotry?”

Some were critical of the veiled dress. One commenter, from Mazar-i-sharif in Afghanistan, simply replied that his...More >>

Canada is cutting diplomatic ties with Iran, a state that is one of the world's biggest sources of global terrorism, genocidal threats and international instability.

This is big.

As Terry Glavin noted this morning, this is a proud day for all Canadians who believe in freedom and democracy. One can only hope that other nations begin to follow Canada's courageous (if overdue) lead.

Science and Islam: A Reply to “1001 Inventions and the Library of Secrets” from acts17apologetics on GodTube.

David Wood of Answering Muslims responds to the "1001 Inventions and the Library of Secrets" exhibit touring major cities. Watch the whole thing, but some of the best lines start around the 7 minute mark:

"In the past 14 centuries, Islam has produced exactly one major scientific breakthrough: time travel. Any society that truly accepts Mohammed's teachings is mysteriously transported back to 7th century Arabia. Why? Because part of the message of Islam is that  Allah wants you to live and think and dress like a 7th century Arab."

It's a place where mentally retarded teenage girls are thrown into prison on the flimsiest pretext of violating the most insane law; where terrorist masterminds are given free reign to plot attacks on innocent civilians in foreign lands; where heroic individuals like Shakeel Afreedi, the doctor who helped find Osama bin Laden, are jailed for treason; where women of minority religions are kidnapped, beaten, raped and forcibly converted to a religion that apparently sanctions such conduct; where a lawyer is killed for trying to change this nation's perverse laws and his killer is lauded as a hero of the people.

This can't go on.

In Star Wars mythology, the planet of Alderaan is a free world that will not kowtow to the Empire. Negotiations are pointless with a regime that only lives to further its own power and ruthlessly destroy its perceived enemies. How would the Empire have dealt with Iranian-style diplomatic negotiations with the IAEA (Intergalactic Astro-Laser Energy Agency)?

IAEA. The intergalactic community is a little concerned about this giant space station orbiting Alderaan. We think you've been building a giant space laser that can destroy entire planets.

DARTH VADER. Our Death Star, er, sorry, Planetary Geological Survey Laser, was built to carry out purely peaceful, scientific research.

IAEA. What about your threats to destroy Alderaan?

DARTH VADER. We only said that Alderaan should be destroyed. That it will be destroyed soon, in a lake of fire. That all Alderaan Planetists must be killed, wherever they may be in the galaxy.

IAEA. That's not a threat?

DARTH VADER. If Alderaan attacks the Empire or any of our allies, or even tries to defend itself from our totally justified TIE Fighter raids, we'll certainly deal with Alderaan then. In fact, if any planet tries to fight the Empire, we...More >>

We've never had any illusions about what the Muslim Brotherhood and associated Islamist theocrats mean for Egypt and the wider Middle East. Apparently, we're not alone. An excellent appraisal by Ben Jefferies in the Huffington Post:

It will not turn out so - despite the fervent prayers of some who seem to think Morsi is waging some sort of democratic jihad against the evils of the junta of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces. Egypt is not a flourishing (or even emerging) democratic state that respects human rights and the rule of law - despite the all the special pleading for clerical fascist Islamists being shamefully made by the Western left in the name of their long-time addictions to spurious theories of anti-imperialism and third-worldism. Bien-pensants may engage in wishful thinking as much as they like; but the simple facts are that the Muslim Brotherhood is not a moderate, democratic force for good and there is nothing progressive about the rule of clerical fascists who hate Jews, women and homosexuals in the name of their god.
