Someone should really tell those Taliban folks in Afghanistan to stop using children as suicide bombers.

There has been an alarming increase in recent months of suicide bombings, and attempted suicide bombings, by children, Human Rights Watch said. Younger and younger children have been involved. Children as young as 7 have reported that they were deployed as suicide bombers. Surviving children who trained as suicide bombers describe having been given amulets containing verses from the Quran that they were told would protect them from the explosion. They said they were told that when the bomb they carried detonated, everyone around them would die but they would survive.

They don't seem to understand that it's depraved and a crime against humanity. I mean... if they knew it was evil, they'd stop it, right? Because they're such, um, reasonable people.

Hmmm. Now that I think about it, maybe they could just cut out the suicide bombing, period?

If only they knew it was evil. But they don't... because they're evil....More >>

No to Taliban thugs. No to Karzai's useless kleptocrats. If there is hope in Afghanistan, it comes to us through the legacy of the Lion of Panjshir:

“There are two extremes coming together. On this side, we believe in human rights, women’s rights, freedom, justice democracy. From that side, they are fundamentally against these values. They believe in an Islamic system, which doesn’t actually have anything to do with the teachings of Islam. If we reconcile, one side has to sacrifice its values, either this side or their side. President Karzai may want to sacrifice his values, but the people of Afghanistan will not accept that. Their side will never sacrifice its values either.”

Middle East analyst and author Walid Phares puts his finger on the troubling character of the Libyan rebels.

The dominant assessment in Washington and Europe since the beginning of the Libyan uprising has been that “we don’t know the rebels,” and thus can’t predict their future moves.”

In fact, we do know who the rebels are and can somewhat anticipate their next major moves: The Transitional National Council (TNC) was formed in Benghazi at the onset of the upheaval by almost all the organized Qaddafi political opposition forces. The TNC includes former diplomats, bureaucrats, military officers from the old regime. It also includes politicians and leaders from movements and groups from the political left, Marxists, Socialists, Arab Nationalists, liberals and Islamists.

The TNC’s real composition can be viewed as secularist and Islamist, the latter being the largest organized group — read militia — across the country. Tribal affiliations are important in the build-up of the new government, but the ideological divide will also be a determinant in projecting the future of the country.

Over the past months, we’ve seen the chief mentor of the Muslim Brotherhood and Al Jazeera ideologue, Sheikh Yusuf al Qardawi blessing the “rebels,”

The Libyan rebels are fighting for control of Tripoli. Government forces are on the verge of defeat.

So much for the stalemate. The only question now is whether the Mad Dog of the Middle East will get out before the rebels get him. Given the frantic pace of action on the ground, it may already be over.More >>

The Libyan rebels' advance towards Tripoli this week has raised a worrying prospect: victory.

Not that the ultimate overthrow of the Mad Dog of the Middle East is a bad thing. On the contrary, his removal from the scene would finally open up opportunities for greater freedom in that land. Though it could also mean a takeover by rebels who may have somewhat exaggerated their democratic credentials in return for NATO's support.

A statement from the rebels about what they see for their nation's future is worrying, though it starts out nicely enough:

"Libya is a democratic and independent state," the document states. "The people are the source of authority, Tripoli is the capital, Islam is the religion, and Islamic sharia is the principal source of legislation."

It sets out key milestones along a roughly two-year path to democracy including an assembly election, a constitutional referendum and a general election.

A sharia state is by definition not a democratic state, since all religious minorities (assuming they haven't already been exterminated or deported from previous sharia-based behavior) are second-class citizens (as we've seen in Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Egypt, etc). A sharia state leaves no real room for democracy --...More >>

Two months ago, we took note of Turkey's uncharacteristically belligerent tone against its neighbor and (until recently) ally, the Syrian regime of Bashar Al-Assad. It sounded an awful lot like Turkey was preparing to flex its muscles in the region and once again become a regional leader rather than a faux Arab state bit player. Indeed, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan may have regognized a once-in-an-epoch opportunity to attempt nothing less bold than a restoration of the Ottoman Empire. Turkey's latest statement to Syria is a clear threat, made in the style of similar recent international interventions in the cause of human rights:

"This is our final word to the Syrian authorities, our first expectation is that these operations stop immediately and unconditionally... If these operations do not stop, there will be nothing left to say about the steps that would be taken."

Will we see a full-blown Turkish invasion and de-facto annexation of Syria on the pretext of toppling a dictator who is slaughtering his own people? Such a gamble would seem to have a lot to recommend it, from Erdogan's perspective.

First, while NATO is tied down in Libya and...More >>
