Human Rights Propaganda

Does eating animals prepare us to persecute humans?

Actually, it's worse than that. One could argue they've effectively endorsed slavery. The UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) has just voted to appoint Mauritania as its Vice-President for the next year.

Mauritania, although all-but ignored by mainstream human-rights groups, is a country that allows 20% of its citizens, about 800,000 people, some as young as 10, to live as slaves.

“Any Muslim with legal or executive authority in Lebanon who supports the legalization of civil marriage is an apostate and outside the religion of Islam.

Those are the words of Grand Mufti Sheikh Mohammed Rashid Qabbani, Lebanon's top Sunni cleric. Qabbani is opposed to new moves towards legalizing civil marriages in Lebanon, so that people of different faiths can marry within a country that has a long history of religious diversity. Today, Lebanese of different faiths who wish to marry have to travel to Cyprus, Turkey or other countries to do so legally.

Qabbani can be reliably counted upon to bark out whenever a good dose of hostile intolerance and narrow thinking is required. When he is not issuing fatwas against civil marriage, Qabbani busies himself with making anti-semitic statements and propagating conspiracy theories about Jews, as when he claimed that 9/11 was "orchestrated" by Jews in order "to justify the persecution of Muslims worldwide" or, when he stated, of "The Innocence of Muslims" film,  "the Jews are behind all of this. What is scandalous is that this film was funded by 100 Jews, who paid five million dollars."

Coverage of rape crimes is often sensational not because of the rarity of the crime, but the rarity of reporting. In the past few months, several particularly horrific rapes-- ones that resulted in the deaths of their victims-- have made international headlines. Each of these tragic stories intimates the greater tragedy, that the headline is but one of many, the vast majority unreported and untried. Revealed below the surface of these stories are conditions-- legal, political, and cultural-- that make sexual violence systematic, and often shrouded in impunity.

Of the stories that garnered international media coverage recently, the most widely covered was that of a 23-year-old Indian woman gang raped on a bus in Delhi in December 2012, who succumbed to her horrific injuries in a Singapore hospital not long afterwards.

Then there was the agonizingly grim case of five-year-old Lama, a Saudi Arabian girl "raped to death" by her father, an Islamist preacher who often appeared on Saudi TV, advising the pious on how to live moral lives. He reportedly suspected his five-year-old of sexual activity, torturing and raping her to death in response, then chuckling about it to her tormented mother, as Lama lay dying in...More >>

Government of Myanmar

While the Government of Myanmar would have you believe all is now well, since it's sudden embrace of at least the idea of democracy, the regime's track record to date suggests an inertia in actually dismantling many of the hallmarks of its notoriously brutal repression of the Burmese people.More >>

Timbuktu's residents have celebrated coming out from under the violent oppression of Sharia law enforced by Islamist thugs. The French get the credit for driving out the savages.

Before the jihadists left town, they took the time to carry out one last "glorious" action for their bloodthirsty god:

"And yesterday, they killed a youth, I don't know why," he said. Mayor Ousmane said in Bamako he heard reports that the Islamists burnt a man alive before leaving.

Until women in India no longer have to worry about living amidst predators, there is now this stopgap measure:

Imagine you are walking. Alone. Down a dark street. A man approaches. He gets aggressive. What do you do next?

Look at your watch?

As part of a briefing about electronic innovations planned for this year by the department in charge of electronic innovations, the Indian government unveiled early plans for a new device it hopes will reduce crimes against women. It is a watch that can alert authorities and family members that you feel you are in danger and start filming at the same time.

Read about other features of the device here. But let's hope that there are also some plans forthcoming from the Indian Government for innovating human behaviour changes among men, and not leaving it all to the technology.
