And the Award for Best Wife Beater Goes to...

On Sunday, R&B performing artist Chris Brown performed (twice) at the 54th Grammy Awards, and won a Grammy for Best R&B artist.

Remember way back something about him slapping around Rihanna?

It would seem that's all forgotten now, buried in the foggy past. Nothing anyhow that should prevent Chris Brown from being invited to perform in the most watched music awards ceremony in the world, right?

If you feel that way, it might be worth reading the recently released court documents detailing exactly what Chris Brown did to "Robyn F.", also known as Rihanna, three years ago:

Brown was driving a vehicle with Robyn F. as the front passenger on an unknown street in Los Angeles. Robyn F. picked up Brown's cellular phone and observed a three-page text message from a woman who Brown had a previous sexual relationship with.

A verbal argument ensued and Brown pulled the vehicle over on an unknown street, reached over Robyn F. with his right hand, opened the car door and attempted to force her out. Brown was unable to force Robyn F. out of the vehicle because she was wearing a seat belt. When he could not force her to exit, he took his right hand and shoved her head against he passenger window of the vehicle, causing an approximate one-inch raised circular contusion.

Robyn F. turned to face Brown and he punched her in the left eye with his right hand. He then drove away in the vehicle and continued to punch her in the face with his right hand while steering the vehicle with his left hand. The assault caused Robyn F.'s mouth to fill with blood and blood to splatter all over her clothing and the interior of the vehicle.

Brown looked at Robyn F. and stated, 'I'm going to beat the sh-- out of you when we get home! You wait and see!' "

The detective said "Robyn F." then used her cell phone to call her personal assistant Jennifer Rosales, who did not answer.

Robyn F. pretended to talk to her and stated, 'I'm on my way home. Make sure the police are there when I get there.'

After Robyn F. faked the call, Brown looked at her and stated, 'You just did the stupidest thing ever! Now I'm really going to kill you!'

Brown resumed punching Robyn F. and she interlocked her fingers behind her head and brought her elbows forward to protect her face. She then bent over at the waist, placing her elbows and face near her lap in [an] attempt to protect her face and head from the barrage of punches being levied upon her by Brown.

Brown continued to punch Robyn F. on her left arm and hand, causing her to suffer a contusion on her left triceps (sic) that was approximately two inches in diameter and numerous contusions on her left hand.

Robyn F. then attempted to send a text message to her other personal assistant, Melissa Ford. Brown snatched the cellular telephone out of her hand and threw it out of the window onto an unknown street.

Brown continued driving and Robyn F. observed his cellular telephone sitting in his lap. She picked up the cellular telephone with her left hand and before she could make a call he placed her in a head lock with his right hand and continued to drive the vehicle with his left hand.

Brown pulled Robyn F. close to him and bit her on her left ear. She was able to feel the vehicle swerving from right to left as Brown sped away. He stopped the vehicle in front of 333 North June Street and Robyn F. turned off the car, removed the key from the ignition and sat on it.

Brown did not know what she did with the key and began punching her in the face and arms. He then placed her in a head lock positioning the front of her throat between his bicep and forearm. Brown began applying pressure to Robyn F.'s left and right carotid arteries, causing her to be unable to breathe and she began to lose consciousness.

She reached up with her left hand and began attempting to gouge his eyes in an attempt to free herself. Brown bit her left ring and middle fingers and then released her. While Brown continued to punch her, she turned around and placed her back against the passenger door. She brought her knees to her chest, placed her feet against Brown's body and began pushing him away. Brown continued to punch her on the legs and feet, causing several contusions.

Robyn F. began screaming for help and Brown exited the vehicle and walked away. A resident in the neighborhood heard Robyn F.'s plea for help and called 911, causing a police response. An investigation was conducted and Robyn F. was issued a Domestic Violence Emergency Protective Order."

Twenty Thousand Egyptians Stand Up for Peace and Democracy

Oh. My mistake. The excited Egyptian crowd was trying to murder a pastor and torch his church.

They just seemed so darn enthusiastic, so I assumed they had something other than genocide on their mind. My bad.

China Continues to Arrest North Korean Refugees

Escapees from the gulag state that is North Korea ought not to be termed defectors. That would indicate a well-thought out ideological break with the cult of Pyongyang and a betrayal of Communist principles. I'm not convinced that's what's going on. I don't think anyone else is, either.

Certainly, as escaped refugees learn what the real world is like outside of the totalitarian state's borders, any lingering solidarity with the dynasty of Kim Il Sung will disappear. But the reason most people try to get out is because they're desperately hungry and fear being imprisoned and tortured for breaking arbitrary rules like not crying enough at the Dear Leader's recent funeral. They're not traitors; they are refugees hoping to escape with their lives and nothing else.

When China arrests these people and sends them back to meet their lethal fate at the hands of the North Korean prison camp guards, it is violating their human right to life. It's sort of like an escapee from Al Qaeda somehow managing to get to a consulate or airport and authorities deciding to hand them back to their former captors for a scheduled beheading. Or to put it another way, if a starving, scarred and penniless North Korean somehow managed to swim across the Pacific Ocean to the USA, how atrocious would it be for police to send him back?

Protests should not be confined to South Korea. China's leaders should know the world is watching.

Libya. Gays Threaten the Continuation of the Human Race

And there you have it. More proof that Libya's new rulers have -- if it's even possible -- even less respect for human rights than the previous Libyan regime.

Protesting the council’s first panel discussion on discrimination and violence based on sexual orientation, scheduled for March 7th, Libya’s representative told the gathering of ambassadors today that LGBT topics “affect religion and the continuation and reproduction of the human race.” He added that, were it not for their suspension, Libya would have opposed the council’s June 2011 resolution on the topic.

Naturally, their membership in the United Nations' Human Rights Council has been fully restored. I'm so glad the international community came together to bring these progressive people into a position of power.

A Saudi Sheikh's Crocodile Tears

Saudi Sheikh Nasser Al Omar weeps crocodile tears as he recommends to his king that Saudi writer Hamza Kashgari be executed for supposedly writing "shameful" comments about the Muslim prophet Mohammed on Twitter.

"I'm so sad! So very sad... that this monstrous apostate has blasphemed by tweeting 'I have loved things about you and I have hated things about you and there is a lot I don't understand about you.' I've never read such horrible words. May blessed and merciful Allah strike them from my memory and make Kashgari burn in hellfire for eternity."

Young Girls Forced Into Marriage in England

In a sense, this phenomenon of child brides in England is a return to traditional family values... from the Dark Ages. Curiously, the human rights advocacy crowd as well as law enforcement agencies don't seem to have much urgency in dealing with 3,000 forced marriages per year in the UK alone.

Girls as young as nine-years-old are being forced into marriage in the London Borough of Islington, with marriages carried out by back street Imans. Although child marriage is illegal in Britain, families circumvent the law by conducting marriages in shariah courts attached to mosques.

To be fair, it's not like the UK isn't throwing some police resources at the problem. But clearly, what they're doing isn't even slowing down these widespread mosque-approved marriages. Read more

Terrorism, Asylum Seekers and the Human Right to Life

The United Kingdom is set to release Abu Qatada, a Muslim cleric the Home Office believes is a risk to national security. Qatada is already wanted on terrorism charges in Jordan -- a place he apparently can't be sent because the Jordanian system of justice includes the use of torture. As such, Qatada will be released on strict bail conditions necessitating that the British state spend lots of money watching him to ensure he doesn't commit mass murder.

This bizarre state of affairs is no longer uncommon. There are examples like it in many Western countries. A dangerous man linked to terrorism or crime manages to discreetly make it past border controls before the civil servants know what's up. When they realize what's going on, they can no longer send them back where they came from because regulations on human rights prevent deportations to hellholes that use torture. Actually, that's no longer the standard -- Britain can't even deport asylum seekers to an EU member like Greece, for fear that they will be subjected to inhumane or degrading treatment.

Clearly, not all refugee or immigrant claimants are a danger to the state, but the courts have effectively determined that countries like the UK have only two options when it comes to the dangerous kind we used to employ people to keep out: let obvious threats wander around freely, or monitor the worst suspects at ruinous expense to prevent mass slaughter of innocents here or abroad.

Human rights are being invoked to eviscerate nations' ability to control the entry of war criminals and terrorists into their countries. But why should the human rights of these false "refugees" or "asylum seekers" trump citizens who will now have to rub elbows with genocidal lunatics and would-be suicide bombers? Read more

Aboriginals and Human Rights in Bizarro World

When I first saw this headline, I just assumed it was from the Onion:

B.C. aboriginals ask China to raise human-rights issues with Harper on PM's visit

There's so much wrong with this story, it's hard to know where to begin. Let's break this down.

Some of Canada's self-appointed First Nations representatives think it's totally cool to have a totalitarian state --

that tramples on the rights of indigenous peoples (Perhaps one of these idiots from British Columbia has heard of Tibet?) --

lecture the elected leader of a democratic state --

(which has a Charter of Rights and Freedoms guaranteeing human rights for all citizens) --

about human rights?

Iran. Passage of Islamic Penal Code Violates Rights

Circulated on behalf of Justice For Iran

Following a meeting on January 18, 2011, the Guardian Council ratified the final text of the new Islamic Penal Code and did not find any part of this code to be in contravention of Islamic Sharia law and the Iranian Constitution. Passage of this code renders the former penal Code ineffective, providing the new and more severe code as replacement.

Prior to this and on multiple occasions, Justice For Iran and other monitoring and human rights organizations had expressed their concerns and reservations regarding the text of the new Code and yet, the Islamic Republic paid no mind to any of the said concerns. Read more
