The Free Thinking Film Society presents two incredible documentary films this month in Ottawa:

  •  An Article of  Hope. An incredible documentary about the remarkable true story of  Colonel Ilan Ramon, Israel's first Astronaut and a tiny Torah that he  carried from the depths of hell to the heights of space.
  • Waiting For Superman. The film analyzes the failures  of the American public education system by following several students as  they strive to be accepted into a charter school.

Irish Filmmaker Nicky Larkin tells the truth about Israel -- brought to you by the Free Thinking Film Society.

"Forty Shades of Grey" is an incredibly film by Larkin, who will be in attendance to answer questions. Larkin wrote recently in the Irish Independent about the evolution of his though on Israel:

I used to hate Israel. I used to think the Left was always right. Not  any more. Now I loathe Palestinian terrorists. Now I see why Israel has  to be hard. Now I see the Left can be Right -- as in right-wing. So why  did I change my mind so completely?

"This documentary explores the burgeoning economic relationship between China and Zambia. It's shot with an acute eye for the discomfort of discordant cultures co-existing. What's interesting here is that you feel this story is only just beginning."
The Times of London

"A dark, quiet, damning documentary looking at China's determined expansion into Africa (here Zambia) through the lives of a Chinese farmer, a road builder, and the Zambian trade minister. When in 1999 China announced its "go global" policy it had Africa very much in mind, and specifically the raw materials that go into the construction of our electrical equipment. A creeping, alarming account of exploitation as well as a study into the psychology of colonialism."
Financial Times

On this Canada Day, fellow Propagandist and Free Thinking Film Society founder Fred Litwin hails the opportunity for Canada to take a leading role on the world stage:

On the international stage, the Americans are not only pulling back, they seem to be abdicating their preeminent role. They're taken a back seat in Libya and have been conspicuously silent on Syria and Bahrain. Obama is not only withdrawing troops from Afghanistan but is actually talking about reconciliation with the Taliban. Iran seems to be able to act with impunity. And, even among Republicans, there seems to be a growing isolationism. Say what you want, this is not the sort of leadership the world needs.

Canada faces none of this. Our budgetary deficit is coming down faster than anticipated, and in any case, it was never of the magnitude of Europe and the US. People forget that before the economic crisis, the biggest problem we had was our low estimates of the surplus! If oil prices continue to stay high, and if the world economy stays relatively healthy, then Canada will again face rising surpluses.

If there ever was a time to jettison our reticence...More >>

Which of these countries appears to be on a slippery slope from democracy to dictatorship?

A) Russia
B) Turkey
C) Venezuela
D) Canada

Or to put it another way, which of these countries are very likely to be run by a dictator in the next six months?

A) China
B) Syria
C) North Korea
D) Canada

If you were among a surprisingly popular and vocal political constituency from far to centre left, you would not be at all surprised to see the teetering dominon of Canuckistan on these kinds of multiple choice lists.

Outsiders would probably consider such views preposterous. Canada, the rogue nation? The True North Uber Alles? Seriously?

Yet such views or not only commonplace -- they're practically taken for granted. Canadian conservative Fred Litwin explains this weird situation in How Imagined Scandals Threaten Our Democracy:

Time and time again, we’ve been warned that the scandal-ridden Conservatives are a threat to our democracy.

Have we lost all perspective in Canada? We spend months and months debating the treatment of Afghan detainees, but precious little time on the Afghan people.

iranium fred litwin free thinking film society ottawa canada iranian regimeThe Free Thinking Film Society's Fred Litwin has an update on the screening of Iranium, apparently shut down by Iranian official (and less diplomatic) efforts. The film, exposing the Iranian drive for nuclear weapons, will be shown in Ottawa on February 6. Here is his message:

I want to express my extreme disappointment that Iranium was not shown in Ottawa this week.  We are committed to ensuring this film is shown in the capital of Canada - and that our cultural policies are not dictated by the Khomeinist thugs of Iran.

So, I am happy to announce that Iranium will now be shown on Sunday, February 6th at 7:00 PM at the Library and Archives Canada.  Clare Lopez will also be flying in to talk at the event.  Tickets are $15.00 (Students/Seniors - $8.00) and will be available, in advance, at the following locations:

Compact Music, 785 1/2 Bank Street
Compact Music, 190 Bank Street
Ottawa Folklore Centre, 1111 Bank Street
Ottawa Festivals, 47 William Street

Telling the Iranian government that the True North Strong and Free has nothing to learn from a notorious serial violator of freedom and human rights. The bright side of these shenanigans is that the film, Iranium, and its exploration of the Iranian nuclear weapons program, is now going to be seen by a lot more people.

Keep up the good work, Free Thinking Film Society

The Ottawa screening of Iranium was canceled, perhaps (though facts are thin on the ground right now) due to a threat from the Iranian government. BCF has the scoop:

“It’s like the Iranians have set something in motion and they’re able to shut down a film in the capital of Canada,” said Fred Litwin. "It's frightening to think that the Iranian embassy could complain and a film could be cancelled in the capital of Canada," Litwin said.

"They obviously thought they could push around some people and they were right."

rule of law canada rcmp police terrorism stephen harper politically correctStephen Harper has waded into a controversy over arrests made during Ramadan (see "One Law for all Canadians, say Harper", by Robert Sibley, Ottawa Citizen, page 6), and said that "In fairness, this is an operational matter for the RCMP and I wouldn't pretend to know all the details and aspects of the story.  But the general approach that this government would expect to see (from law enforcement agencies) is that the law, our important laws, are enforced every day of the year."

What happened in this story is that RCMP officers and the Ottawa Police arrested two men during Ramadan and charged them with terrorism-related offences.  The next day a meeting was held with the muslim community and an apology was offered about the timing of the arrests.

Well, I totally agree with the Prime Minister.

But...

What about Caledonia?  For years, the Ontario Provincial Police have not enforced the law against native occupiers - in fact, turning parts of Caledonia into Canada's first no-go area.  Where has Mr. Harper been during...More >>
