Official multiculturalism in the UK speeded up under the Labor party and continued under the present government has led to broken borders, segregated communities, increased violence and a broken welfare state. Now the government says "Enough."

Such, Labour claimed, was its commitment to ensuring that only people with a right to be in Britain could come here that in 2008 it set up the UK Border Agency. The truth, unfortunately, was very different.

Theresa May, the Home Secretary, has announced that the agency is being wound up next month precisely because it is useless, and the officials who ran it — rather like the borders they supposedly policed — were out of control.

Despite the strong threat from international terrorism, the evidence of eastern European criminal gangs infiltrating Britain, and our overburdened public and social services, 500,000 unchecked people were let in to Britain via Eurostar between 2007 and last year, while countless so-called students were just nodded through.

This Chinese factory worker labors 60 hours a week for low wages and was told that if she were interviewed by foreign media, she'd be criminally investigated.

I'm sure she's happy to have the job and considers it a step up from even worse work in the countryside. And I'm not suggesting that all the companies that do business in China pull up stakes (only to set them down again in Vietnam or Indonesia). But of all companies out there, you'd think Apple could afford to provide its workers with better conditions. They're still making more than 30 percent profit margin on their products, while their competitors are fighting over crummy 4 to 6 percent margins.

That's so nice! Why yes, we do appreciate the suggestion to engage in an inner spiritual struggle so that we can become better people. You people are so kind.

I'm sure that when they say, "Death to America", what they really mean is that America needs to get beyond the lethal political gridlock that has killed our public discourse and embrace a more positive approach. So wise. So generous with their advice.

More good news from Libya, where the rebel, er, government has replaced a one-man dictatorship with a 10,000 gunman dictatorship. This kind of progress is one step forward, two steps back.

A few weeks ago, I went to check on reports that there was digging going on in Gaddafi's former compound in Tripoli. The dictator's gold, it is rumoured, lies hidden somewhere in the ground.

 

A group of men stopped me from entering.

On whose authority, I wanted to know?

 

"Authority?" the man in charge asked.

"Yes," I said, "which ministry or government department has decreed that the BBC should be prevented from seeing your digging?"

 

"I don't need any ministry," said the man, patting his Kalashnikov. "This is my ministry."

How very odd. A thoroughly devout Muslim man decides that it is his religious duty to murder a whole bunch of Americans and destroy the symbols of democracy in the US Capitol. Thankfully, he is arrested by the FBI before he can commit these atrocious acts.

I can't imagine where he got that idea. I mean, I've just never heard anything like it before. Imagine! A religious man trying to commit mass murder in the name of his merciful God.

Turns out he even prayed in a mosque right before he went on his "mission". Well, now I've heard everything!

Oh, wait. I seem to recall something now...

Nigerian Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab was sentenced to life in prison for his attempt to take down a Detroit-bound airliner on Christmas Day in 2009. The confessed Al Qaeda operative claimed that his attempted murder of close to 300 people was mandated by the teachings of Islam's holy book, the Quran.

Presumably, the real punishment for this jihadist, so perversely intent on protecting the supposed sanctity of his religion, is that this "defender of Islam" shall be known in perpetuity as the Underwear Bomber.

Coming any day now, when an overseas airport security worker fails to conduct a critical cavity search on a similarly red-flagged passenger: the Up-the-Ass Bomber. You know it's going to happen eventually.

At the Rally for Free Expression, journalist Nick Cohen and scientist Richard Dawkins take on the gutless accomodation of theocratic fascism in the UK and abroad. The tide appears to be turning.

If Russia didn't have plenty of oil and mineral wealth to spread around, it would still be a backwards shell of a country. As things stand, its military is composed of conscripts who are ill-paid and frequently brutalized; capable of invading a tiny country like Georgia, but barely able to handle a more insidious insurgency to its south. Its civil society is broken, pounded by Putin. On a diplomatic level, it finds itself siding with pariah states.

So, what is the priority for this nation often characterized as a colossus with feet of clay? Building more nuclear ICBMs to strike the USA, naturally.

This is apparently the result of all that nice goodwill generated by the Obama administration's "reset" of relations with Vladimir Putin's Russia and the ratification of the New Start Arms Control Treaty. It should come as no surprise: nuclear weapons, along with oil and gas exports, are just about the only thing that still qualifies Russia as a "Great Power."

The Cold War is only over when we say it's over, Comrade.
