Anti-Fascist Propaganda

Iran has revised its penal code, but opted to keep the punishment of stoning to death for the crime of adultery, in defiance of international human rights law, global condemnation, and well, decency.More >>

I'm not really sure why any sane person would continue to seek to provide the Iranian Government's Press TV mouthpeice George Galloway with a platform for his theatrics and Islamism cheerleading, or assume that he has any rational case to make on anything at all, or that he would have the courtesy to show up somewhere on time. But the Oxford Debates gave it a go, and got some brief exposure to Galloway's unique personal brand of discrimination and vulgarity. Mahmood Naji, the organizer of the debate that Galloway walked out of upon discovering that his opponent was Israeli, has written an open letter to Galloway in The Huffington Post:

Dear Mr Galloway,

It has not escaped my attention that, since discourteously walking out on an event I had spent much time and effort organising, you have been claiming repeatedly that I had "misled" and "deceived" you. I was not intending on replying until I saw you once again attempt to, in my opinion, slander me on Press TV.

In that broadcast you claimed, "... I was deceived; I was not told by the Iraqi, Muslim organiser of the event, that I would be debating against a 20-year old

“Any Muslim with legal or executive authority in Lebanon who supports the legalization of civil marriage is an apostate and outside the religion of Islam.

Those are the words of Grand Mufti Sheikh Mohammed Rashid Qabbani, Lebanon's top Sunni cleric. Qabbani is opposed to new moves towards legalizing civil marriages in Lebanon, so that people of different faiths can marry within a country that has a long history of religious diversity. Today, Lebanese of different faiths who wish to marry have to travel to Cyprus, Turkey or other countries to do so legally.

Qabbani can be reliably counted upon to bark out whenever a good dose of hostile intolerance and narrow thinking is required. When he is not issuing fatwas against civil marriage, Qabbani busies himself with making anti-semitic statements and propagating conspiracy theories about Jews, as when he claimed that 9/11 was "orchestrated" by Jews in order "to justify the persecution of Muslims worldwide" or, when he stated, of "The Innocence of Muslims" film,  "the Jews are behind all of this. What is scandalous is that this film was funded by 100 Jews, who paid five million dollars."

Pakistan, which incidentally generates the highest number of porn and sex-related Internet searches of any country in the world (including an astounding array of bestiality searches- see below), frequently bans websites like youtube for being "blasphemous". Most recently, the Government of Pakistan has banned access online to the website of the Canadian newspaper, The Toronto Sun. In response, the newspaper stated the following,

we are disappointed that someone unknown in the Pakistan government has taken the decision to place us behind a censorship firewall. Maybe they think no news is good news, especially when it comes to a newspaper that consistently exposes a raft of questionable policies and decisions.

After all, this is a military administration that in the past has shown scant regard for basic values of democracy, rule of law, accountability and a host of other principles we here in Canada take for granted.

The Pakistani High Commission in Ottawa has not formally confirmed or denied the ban, but is expected to make a statement on Monday. And when they do, we can likely expect something as nonsensical and contradictory as what they said when they blocked Youtube: "We believe in access to free information." ......More >>

As the intrepid Terry Glavin notes,

It seems to take quite a lot for a spectacular state-failure catastrophe to attract the attention of the civilized world these days, what with U.S. President Barack Obama’s persistent and absurd reiterations of his administration’s fantasy that “the tide of war is receding” and everything.

But France is paying attention. Besides stepping up to the Islamist assault on Mali,

French Interior Minister Manuel Valls has said that a handful of radical imams will be expelled from the country in the coming days as part of ongoing efforts to deport foreign-born preachers who "refer to the need to fight against France".

Liberty, equality, fraternity. France: the country that keeps on giving.

Irena Sendler was a Polish nurse who saved 2,500 children during the Holocaust by smuggling them out of Nazi-occupied Warsaw. She meticulously maintained records of the children's real names so she could help them to be reunited with their families after the war. Most of their families, however, perished. But these children survived, and so did Irena, though barely, and she lived long enough to be reunited with many of the children in later years. She died in 2008.

"Every child saved with my help is a justification of my existence on this Earth, and not a title to glory."
