Woodward slammed Obama’s decision to announce that sequester cuts would force an American aircraft carrier to not deploy to the Persian Gulf.

“Can you imagine Ronald Reagan sitting there and saying ‘Oh, by the way, I can’t do this because of some budget document’?” Woodward asked incredulously. “Or George W. Bush saying, ‘You know, I’m not going to invade Iraq because I can’t get the aircraft carriers I need.’ Or even Bill Clinton saying, ‘You know, I’m not going to attack Saddam Hussein’s intelligence headquarters,’ as he did when Clinton was president because of some budget document?”

If there’s anything that’s become thematic in the United States recently, it’s this: some nutjob opens fire with lethal intent in a public place. People die, or are at the very least wounded. The public becomes angry. The media responds to this anger by looking for scapegoats. In doing so, they can’t resist the urge to politicize the shooting.

They dig deep into the history of the shooter in search of right-wing or conservative connections. Any little thing will do. They report if the shooter’s bookshelf features offerings by Glenn Beck and Bill O’Reilly.  They report breathlessly if a local Tea Party member happens to have the same name as the shooter – as they did after James Holmes shot up a Colorado movie theatre (the Tea Party member in question turned out to be an entirely different individual). If they could ever find a shooter who was a registered Republican, they would probably hit the ceiling with glee.

So precisely how would the left react if a shooter turned out have left-wing or liberal leanings?

The USA is fighting back against state-backed cyber-hackers from distant lands by upping their own defensive and offensive capabilities.

About 10 years too late, but still...

The Post reported on plans for creation of three types of forces under the Cyber Command. Two are familiar: “combat mission forces” to serve in parallel with military units and “protection forces” to defend Pentagon networks. A third area is new: “national mission forces” that would seek to head off any threat to critical infrastructure in the United States, such as electrical grids, dams and other potential targets deemed vital to national security. These “national mission forces” are expected to operate outside the United States, perhaps launching preemptive strikes on adversaries preparing to take down an American bank or electric grid.
