American Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) is in the hospital with a gunshot wound to the head. Six were killed in the attack, including a child.

All the facts are not in, but I'm willing to bet this is connected to a continuous stream of political rhetoric like this from Tea Party demagogues like Sarah Palin: "Commonsense Conservatives & lovers of America: 'Don't Retreat, Instead - RELOAD!"

Actually, the only surprise is that this hasn't happened sooner. When political celebrities and elites suggest to the public that it's OK to shoot your political opponents, it's only a matter of time before someone takes that rhetoric literally.

The American political system has sleepwalked into extremism. Now that everyone's fully awake, it will be necessary to make an example of someone who decides political power comes out of the barrel of a gun. 

When the suspect is found guilty, a hanging is too good for this creep. But the bigger challenge is getting American politicians to come face to face with this demonic genie they've helped let out of the bottle.
