Hockey Fans For Peace?
Is nothing sacred? There's a new group in Vancouver - Hockey Fans for Peace. What do they want? An end to fighting in hockey? A cleaner game with no hits to the head? Using hockey to promote peace in the Middle East?
Here's what they want: spokesman Kimball Cariou said Wednesday the group is calling on the CBC "to either stop the promotion of militarism during hockey broadcasts, or else to allow one of its members to debate Cherry during an upcoming 'Coach's Corner'."
By the way, Cariou is or was the Editor of People's Voice, a Communist Party newspaper.
And, backing up Cariou is Derrick O'Keefe, co- chair of Stopwar.ca. But in the article, they describe O'Keefe as a hockey fan!
"It's something that's bothered me for a lot of years that Don Cherry's 'Coach's Corner' has been used to really give a one-sided platform to talk about the war only in full support," said O'Keefe, a member of the group's Facebook page. "And when Don Cherry makes political comments during the hockey broadcast he's never challenged."
Do these people have nothing better to do than to start a group to protest Don Cherry? One of the most beloved people in Canada - a supporter of police, firefighters, the military, and a tireless promoter of various charities - Cherry is a Canadian original. Does this group believe that their 'stop war' beliefs never get aired on CBC?
