Corporations Helping Rebuild Haiti
Remember Haiti? Back before the Gulf of Mexico got slimed by BP, the horrific earthquake in that part of the world was THE story. And of course, the anti-imperialists had their own take on the USA's interest in this poor little country:
The urgency with which the US has now invaded Haiti with 20,000 troops and its clear determination to occupy and control Haiti cannot be seen as a mere response to the longstanding threat of Cuba and the Bolivarians. The military intervention in Haiti has to be seen as a response to a much larger threat, the growing power of China globally and in Latin America, where it is China that is becoming the main rival contesting the US sphere of interest in its own backyard. US policy in Latin America today is shaped by the reality that it is China that has become the backer of the Bolivarian regimes, and that it is China that is most likely to benefit from the restoration of capitalism in Cuba.
Right. North Americans are only interested in helping Haitians to keep the Chinese Red Army out of the Caribbean. Makes perfect sense.
Notwithstanding the Obama administration's nefarious plans for Haiti, corporate America has stepped up to the plate as well:
Officials from leading companies, including Dow Chemical Company and FedEx, last week met with the Haitian government and leading NGOs during a corporate trip to earthquake-ravaged and poverty-stricken Haiti. The delegation, convened and hosted by the U.S. Chamber Business Civic Leadership Center (BCLC), CHF International, and Executives Without Borders, sought ways to engage in long-term recovery via activities such as in-country relationship building, international volunteerism, and understanding of the Haitian leadership's priority redevelopment areas.
Executives Without Borders? Who knew? Anyway, these corporations will be coordinating and sinking millions of dollars into Haitian reconstruction and redevelopment. So much for greedy exploitative capitalists.
"They're just going in there to make a buck off the poor Haitians exploited backs!" cry the Marxist evangelists, oblivious to the idea that Haitians might actually want to have jobs and make some money to, you know, eat, and stuff.
